The day Mugdho (Mir Mahfuzur Rahman) and I first crossed paths remains vivid in my memory, occurring on January 5, 2019. Dr. Munnujahan Ara, our respected professor, visited our classroom in search of students keen on cultural pursuits. Identifying our mutual interest in playing the guitar, Mugdho and I promptly volunteered. Our bond quickly solidified through music rehearsals, highlighting his natural ability to connect with others effortlessly.
Aside from excelling in guitar playing, Mugdho showcased remarkable skills in ukulele and beatboxing. His unyielding determination and passion for his endeavors were palpable. Our friendship expanded beyond music, extending to various extracurricular activities on campus, from sports like football and cricket to indoor games like chess, table tennis, and carom board. Engaging in spirited conversations became a cherished routine for us.
Several standout moments exemplify Mugdho’s exceptional character. In our first year at university, upon receiving a wedding invitation from a classmate in Magura, Mugdho insisted on accompanying me, demonstrating his camaraderie. Despite attending the ceremony for a brief period, his lively spirit left an enduring impression. Following the event, he boldly managed to secure us a free ride back to Khulna, proving his resourcefulness and adventurous spirit.
During a late-night emergency when a fellow batchmate fell seriously ill, Mugdho swiftly mobilized our response, showcasing his compassion and selflessness. Despite the impending semester final exam the next day, he selflessly stayed behind at the hospital to ensure our friend’s well-being while encouraging others to focus on their studies.
I also had the privilege of experiencing the warmth of Mugdho’s family when he invited me to his cousin’s wedding. The playful banter between Mugdho and his twin cousin, Snigdho, reflected their close bond. The genuine hospitality extended by his family members underscored the origins of Mugdho’s friendly nature and sense of responsibility, which he inherited from his relatives.
On campus, Mugdho actively opposed corruption and drug abuse, advocating for the welfare of our batch and university community. Despite facing obstacles in establishing a scout group at Khulna University, he remained steadfast in offering support to those in need at all times.
Our shared passion for travel led us on numerous excursions organized by the mathematics department, with our most memorable journey occurring in 2022. Embarking on a bike tour from Khulna, we traversed 18 districts, culminating in Tetulia where we witnessed an unforgettable football World Cup final.
My last encounter with Mugdho took place at Uttara North Metro Station in Dhaka, where he graciously offered me a ride on his cherished Bumblebee motorcycle. Despite his aspirations to study in Europe and travel extensively, our plans for future adventures were abruptly halted by his untimely departure.
As we commemorate one year since his passing, Mugdho remains etched in our memories, forever embodying his signature smile and playful inquiry, “Kire? Ki obostha?” (“Hey! How are things?”).
