“Remembering Humayun Faridee: Iconic Actor’s Legacy Lives On”

Humayun Faridee, a prominent actor in Bangladesh renowned for his work in theatre, television, and film, made a lasting impact on the country’s cultural scene over a span of thirty years. Born on May 29, 1952, in Narinda, Old Dhaka, Faridee emerged as a significant figure during the golden era of Bangladeshi TV dramas in the 1980s and 1990s before establishing himself as a formidable presence in the film industry.

Today commemorates the 14th anniversary of the passing of Humayun Faridee, a celebrated figure in theatre and film.

Faridee studied economics at Jahangirnagar University where his passion for theatre paved the way for his illustrious artistic journey. His theatrical career began during his university days, leading to his involvement in numerous productions that shaped the landscape of modern Bangladeshi theatre. Notable works include “Muntasir Fantasy,” “Fanimansa,” “Shakuntala,” “Kittankhola,” and “Keramat Mangal,” with affiliations with acclaimed figures like Selim Al Deen and Nasir Uddin Yousuff.

His television debut in “Nikhonj Sangbad” marked the start of his widespread recognition. Faridee gained immense popularity through iconic TV dramas such as “Songsoptok,” “Kothao Keu Nei,” “Saat Asmaner Siri,” “Ekdin Hothat,” “Shiter Pakhi,” “Nil Akasher Shondhane,” “Durbin Diye Dekhun,” “Bhangoner Shobdo Shuni,” and “Chandragrosto.” His portrayal of “Kankata Ramjan” in “Songsoptok” remains a memorable character in Bangladeshi television history.

Transitioning to cinema, Faridee’s debut film was Tanvir Mokammel’s “Hooliya.” He ventured into commercial cinema with Shahidul Islam Khokon’s “Shontrash,” gaining acclaim for his antagonist roles. Noteworthy performances followed in films like “Bachelor,” “Joyjatra,” “Shyamol Chhaya,” “Ekattorer Jishu,” “Mayer Morjada,” “Bishwapremik,” and “Palabi Kothay.” In 2004, he received the National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in “Matritto.” Posthumously, he was honored with the Ekushey Padak in 2018 for his contributions to the arts.

Faridee’s personal life also garnered public interest. He was initially married to Minu, with whom he had a daughter, Devyani, before later marrying prominent actor Suborna Mustafa, with the couple parting ways in 2008.

His demise on February 13, 2012, in Dhaka sparked widespread mourning within the cultural sphere. Esteemed theatre personalities and actors paid their respects, while political leaders, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition leader Khaleda Zia, offered condolences.

Filmmaker Nurul Alam Atique reminisced about their late-night discussions, recalling Faridee’s caring words to take care of health before bidding farewell. More than ten years since his passing, Humayun Faridee remains a benchmark for talent and passion in Bangladeshi acting. His body of work, spanning across theatre, television, and film, continues to be revisited, particularly during his birth and death commemorations, showcasing his enduring influence on the country’s cultural heritage.
