“Photographer Shahidul Alam Leads Gaza Flotilla Protest”

-

Photographer-activist Shahidul Alam expressed their mission as a stance against what they labeled as the “illegal siege” of Gaza, emphasizing that their presence was not primarily focused on delivering humanitarian aid. Alam clarified that while they carried supplies, their main goal was to challenge the blockade. He highlighted that their group was distinct from the Sumud Flotilla, emphasizing that this was the original plan.

Alam disclosed that a total of nine vessels, including eight boats and a larger vessel he is aboard, have set out with the anticipation of meeting up with more boats later. Despite the risks of being at the forefront, Alam stated that they had anticipated this and made a calculated decision. The vessel he is on accommodates 96 individuals, comprising mainly media and medical professionals, organizers, members of the Flotilla Coalition steering committee, and the crew.

In a video shared on Facebook, Alam mentioned that information was being received intermittently and not always verifiable. He described the sea conditions as relatively calm in the morning but noted the unpredictability of the weather. Alam recounted enduring rough seas the previous day and briefly feeling unwell but recovering soon after.

The flotilla’s purpose, as Alam emphasized, is to protest the deaths of journalists and medical professionals in Gaza and challenge the media blockade imposed on foreign press. He concluded with a message of determination, stating, “Your love and support empower us. We will overcome. Palestine will achieve freedom.”

Despite their efforts, the Israeli military intercepted the final boat of an aid flotilla bound for Gaza, following the detainment of about 450 activists, including prominent figure Greta Thunberg, the previous day.
