One Direction make incredible gesture in memory of late bandmate Liam Payne

One Direction are set to re-release their 2013 documentary This Is Us with proceeds being donated to charities in honour of late singer Liam Payne.

The iconic boyband found fame on The X Factor in 2010 – when show boss Simon Cowell and guest judge Nicole Scherzinger paired Liam with fellow hopefuls Niall Horan,Zayn Malik,Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. They went on to achieve international fame and sold over 70 million records worldwide.

Tragedy struck the band last year when Liam fell to his death from a third floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was just 31 when he died following the incident last October – leaving fans heartbroken the world over.

On Tuesday night, One Direction’s big-screen documentary, This Is Us – directed by late filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, who died following a cancer battle aged 53 last year – will return to cinemas for one night. Screening at Odeon cinemas – with proceeds from the screenings set to be donated to various mental health charities in Liam’s honour.

Taking to social media to share the news, Odeon wrote: “By popular demand, and in tribute to the late Liam Payne, we’re bringing One Direction: This is Us back to the big screen January 14. We’ll be donating all ticket profits from this screening to the mental health awareness charities MIND, SAMH and AWARE NI.”

The cinema chain describes the film: “An intimate all-access look at life on the road for the global music phenomenon. Weaved with stunning live concert footage, this inspiring feature film tells the remarkable story of Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis’ meteoric rise to fame, from their humble hometown beginnings and competing on the X-Factor, to conquering the world and performing at London’s famed O2 Arena.”

The synopsis concludes: “Hear it from the boys themselves and see through their own eyes what it’s really like to be One Direction.” Fans have been touched by the gesture and have taken to X to encourage fans to snap up tickets.

One wrote on X: “Nice one Odeon, this will mean a lot to fans.” And another wrote: “Thank you for that. Liam’s deserved more than tributes, he’s irreplaceable. But you’re doing a good thing.”

Following news of Liam’s death, his band released a statement saying: “We will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam.”

In a statement of his own, Harry wrote: “The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished of my life. I will miss him always, my lovely friend”.

While fellow member Louis described Liam as “the kind brother I’d longed all my life for.” And added: “Reminiscing about all the thousands of amazing memories we had together is a luxury I thought I’d have with you for life.” He added: “I want you to know that if Bear ever needs me I will be the Uncle he needs in his life and tell him stories of how amazing his dad was.”
