Ninad, a newly established theater group in Dhaka, is debuting its first show on Wednesday at the Alliance Française auditorium. The performance features a Bengali rendition of Jean Cocteau’s one-act play “The Human Voice,” skillfully adapted by Prajna Tasnuva Rubaiyat to resonate with modern audiences. The play will run on October 10 and 11, coinciding with World Mental Health Day and the anniversary of the playwright’s death.
“The Human Voice,” a play from 1930, delves into the poignant final phone conversation of a woman grappling with heartbreak and abandonment as her lover prepares to marry another. Ninad’s interpretation retains the raw emotion and intimacy of Cocteau’s original work while infusing it with a distinct Bengali perspective, showcasing a blend of profound psychological insights and innovative theatrical elements.
In addition to the main performances, the production includes a captivating pre-show installation to immerse viewers in the play’s emotional landscape. After the final show, a panel discussion will delve into Cocteau’s life and legacy, shedding light on his enduring impact on the world of theater.
