Dinajpur Medical College Hospital has established a three-member medical panel to oversee the proper care of a newborn infant discovered abandoned in the hospital’s children’s ward on Thursday. Hospital Director Dr Fazlur Rahman directed the formation of the board, appointing Prof Nurul Islam from the paediatrics department as the lead member. The other two members, Dr Mostakin and Dr Rumana Riaz, were also designated by the director.
Dr Fazlur reported that the premature baby’s health had worsened since Friday, noting a decline in her ability to latch and suckle, as well as experiencing a convulsion during the day. The infant is currently receiving IV saline to address her nutritional requirements.
Several couples have expressed interest in adopting the baby, approaching hospital authorities. However, decisions regarding the adoption process will be handled by the Dinajpur District Children Welfare Board, overseen by the deputy commissioner under the Department of Social Welfare, once the child’s health stabilizes, as per hospital sources.
The newborn was discovered abandoned on a hospital bed in the children’s ward on Thursday evening, accompanied by a handwritten note inside a bag stating, “I am a helpless woman… Please, someone take care of her…”
Intern doctor Golam Ahad, who was on duty at the time, mentioned that a couple, approximately 50 years old, claiming to be the infant’s grandparents, arrived at the ward. They requested the baby’s admission to the hospital and departed shortly thereafter.
