Netanyahu’s Gaza Control Plan Sparks International Criticism

-

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced criticism for his approach to the Palestinian issue, with concerns raised over his lack of a clear strategy. Following a 10-hour late-night meeting with his security cabinet, Netanyahu secured majority approval to take control of Gaza City as part of a five-point plan aimed at defeating Hamas and ending the conflict.

The plan includes disarming Hamas, returning hostages, demilitarizing Gaza, assuming security control, and establishing a new civil administration. This proposal mirrors recent suggestions by world leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. However, a key difference lies in Israel’s rejection of any current Palestinian authority, opting for a system overseen by Israeli and international partners.

The Israeli military plans to provide humanitarian aid to civilians outside combat zones while preparing to take control of Gaza City. This move has raised concerns from the UN human rights office, citing the potential for further displacement and atrocities. Israeli military leaders, including Lt Gen Eyal Zamir, have expressed reservations about the plan, fearing risks to Israeli hostages and troops.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized the decision, warning of disastrous consequences and blaming far-right figures for pushing Netanyahu towards a costly and dangerous strategy. Hamas condemned the Israeli move, vowing resilience against occupation efforts. Germany suspended weapons exports to Israel in response to the escalation, urging restraint and emphasizing the need for negotiations and ceasefire efforts.

UK Prime Minister Starmer also criticized Israel’s escalation, calling it counterproductive and likely to result in more violence. While there are calls for peace and coexistence, the current political climate in Israel appears entrenched in conflict and suspicion.

Overall, the situation remains tense as international actors weigh in on the escalating crisis, highlighting the complexities and challenges facing efforts to resolve the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
