“Myanmar General Election Begins Dec. 28 Amidst Controversy”

-

Myanmar is set to commence its general election on December 28, according to state television reports. This marks the first phase of elections in the country, which has been embroiled in conflict for nearly five years. Critics have already dismissed the upcoming polls as lacking legitimacy.

The Union Election Commission of Myanmar announced that the subsequent phases of the election will take place throughout December and January due to security concerns. The specific dates for these stages will be disclosed later, as reported by MRTV.

Following a 2021 coup that ousted the elected civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar has been plagued by unrest. The military junta, headed by Min Aung Hlaing, has encountered strong opposition from armed factions.

A total of 55 political parties have been registered for the elections, with nine intending to participate nationwide, according to state media sources. The Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper stated that six additional parties are currently being reviewed for approval and registration.
