Warner Bros. has given the green light for a sequel to the highly successful “A Minecraft Movie,” which raked in close to one billion dollars worldwide. The upcoming film, named “Minecraft 2,” is currently in the works and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 23, 2027, as per the studio’s recent announcement.
The sequel is expected to debut approximately two years after the initial “Minecraft” release in April, which proved to be a massive hit at the box office. Drawing inspiration from the immensely popular video game, the PG-rated adventure produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary exceeded all expectations, amassing $162 million domestically and $312 million globally in its opening weekend. Fueled by a younger audience and the trending “Chicken Jockey” phenomenon, the movie ultimately grossed $957 million worldwide, securing its position as the second highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2025, trailing only behind Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” ($1.03 billion).
While Warner Bros. has kept the specifics of the sequel under wraps for now, it was revealed that Jared Hess is set to return to direct and co-write the screenplay with Chris Galletta. Hess, the director of the original film, collaborated with Jack Black and Jason Momoa in key roles, portraying a band of outcasts who find themselves transported into a blocky realm and guided by the expert crafter Steve (portrayed by Black).
The production team for “Minecraft 2” includes Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, and Jason Momoa.
The remarkable success of the first movie marked a significant upturn for Warner Bros. after a series of lackluster releases like “Joker: Folie à Deux,” “Mickey 17,” and “The Alto Knights.” Since the debut of “A Minecraft Movie,” the studio has enjoyed a string of hits, including “Sinners,” “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” “F1: The Movie” (distributed by Apple), “Superman,” “Weapons,” and “The Conjuring: Last Rites.”
Warner Bros.’ final film of the year, “One Battle After Another,” helmed by Paul Thomas Anderson and featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, has already amassed $110 million in revenue within just two weeks of its release, despite its $130 million production budget.
