A legal assistant, identified as Amitava Chandra Sujan, was brutally killed by unknown individuals at his residence in the Sadar upazila of Gaibandha on Friday evening, according to local authorities. Sujan, aged 40, served as a “muhuri” at the Gaibandha District and Sessions Judge Court.
The incident occurred in the courtyard of Sujan’s home in the Khamar Ballamjhar area around 7:00 pm, as reported by Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al Mamun of Gaibandha Sadar Police Station. Despite efforts to rush him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, Sujan succumbed to his injuries.
According to statements from family members and witnesses, a gang of assailants barged into the property through the main entrance and launched a vicious attack on Sujan, striking him on the head with an axe before making their escape.
Sujan’s brother, Sudhan Chandra Roy, raised concerns about a long-standing land dispute with a neighboring party that had persisted for the past three to four years. The family suspects that the neighbors might be connected to the violent assault.
Officer Abdullah mentioned that the weapon used in the attack, an axe, was recovered from the crime scene, but the motive behind the heinous act is yet to be determined.
