A leader affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami in the Sutrapur area of Dhaka has been sentenced to prison for involvement in vote buying activities. This incident occurred as tensions rose between supporters of Jamaat and BNP in the Korail slum on the eve of the national election.
Following his arrest, Md Habibur Rahman, who held a position in the Sutrapur thana unit of Jamaat, was immediately sentenced to a two-day jail term by a mobile court. Md Nazim Uddin Al Azad, an additional deputy commissioner of DMP’s Lalbagh division, confirmed this information to reporters.
Police had apprehended Rahman earlier on suspicion of engaging in vote buying practices within the Sutrapur area. Additionally, a separate altercation took place between female members of Jamaat and BNP in the Korail slum, resulting in an injury to one Jamaat activist during the clash.
Khalid Monsur, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Banani Police Station, verified the incident, stating that female Jamaat activists were in a discussion with their polling agents when BNP supporters intervened, sparking a physical confrontation.
Despite the incident, no formal complaint has been lodged as of yet. The OC assured that appropriate action would be taken if a complaint is officially filed.
