Italy Makes History with First-Ever T20 World Cup Win

-

Italy, a country well-known for its football history, secured a remarkable 10-wicket triumph in their T20 World Cup 2026 Group C match against Nepal at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. Italy, the lowest-ranked team in the 20-team competition, dismissed Nepal for 123 in 19.3 overs before the Mosca brothers, Anthony (62* off 32) and Justin (60* off 44), established a record-breaking 124-run partnership to guide the football-loving nation to a commanding victory in just 12.4 overs.

This victory marked Italy’s first-ever win in T20 World Cups, as they debuted in this edition of the tournament. It was only the second time an associate nation achieved a 10-wicket victory in the tournament’s history, following Oman’s similar-margin win over PNG in 2021. This win was Italy’s first 10-wicket triumph and Nepal’s second 10-wicket loss in T20Is (following their defeat against WI in 2025).

Italy sealed the win with 44 balls to spare, the most in an associate nation’s victory in T20 World Cups and the third-highest in a successful chase of 120-plus runs in the tournament’s history. The Mosca brothers’ 124-run partnership broke the record for the highest sibling partnership in T20 World Cups, surpassing Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal’s 96-run stand for Pakistan against Australia in the 2014 edition. Anthony’s unbeaten 62* also became the highest individual score by an Italian in T20 World Cups.

The victory propelled Italy to third place in Group C, displacing England to fourth, while West Indies maintained the top spot in the group. Nepal, on the other hand, remained at the bottom of the table, a stark contrast to their competitive match against England on Sunday.
