“Israeli Forces Intercept Gaza Aid Flotilla in International Waters”

-

A Gaza-bound aid flotilla, which included Bangladeshi photographer and writer Shahidul Alam, was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters yesterday. The group consisted of over 140 journalists, doctors, and activists from various parts of the world. The flotilla, organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), aimed to challenge Israel’s blockade and provide humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza. This incident marks the second interception by Israel, with a previous convoy, the Global Sumud Flotilla, also being stopped last week.

In a video message shared on Facebook, Shahidul Alam stated that they had been intercepted at sea by Israeli forces. He condemned Israel for its actions in Gaza and called for continued support for the Palestinian cause. Bangladesh has reached out to a friendly Middle Eastern country to aid in securing Shahidul’s release, though the specific country has not been disclosed.

The FFC reported that all nine boats in the Thousand Madleens to Gaza campaign, including the Conscience, were intercepted 120 nautical miles off the Gaza coast. Israeli forces seized the humanitarian fleet, detaining 145 participants, including doctors, journalists, and activists. The flotilla, carrying aid valued at over $110,000, aimed to deliver medical supplies to Gaza’s hospitals.

The Israeli foreign ministry confirmed the interception, stating that the passengers were safe and in good health. Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza for nearly 18 years, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region. Negotiations to address the conflict are ongoing, with a 20-point plan proposed by US President Donald Trump being discussed in Egypt.

Bangladesh officials, including Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, have called for the immediate release of Shahidul and the detained individuals. Various organizations, including Ganosamhati Andolon and Naripokkho, have also urged the government to take action to ensure the safe return of the detained individuals.
