Indonesia included the late military dictator Suharto in the roster of “national heroes” in a recent ceremony, sparking controversy among activists and scholars due to his contentious human rights legacy. Suharto was officially recognized as one of the ten individuals honored as national heroes, as announced in a decree by the presidential military secretary. President Prabowo Subianto, who is Suharto’s former son-in-law, oversaw the ceremony marking National Hero Day.
