Former Zimbabwean cricket captain, Sean Williams, is undergoing treatment for drug addiction and has been ruled out of future national team selection, as announced by Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) on Tuesday. The 39-year-old all-rounder has voluntarily made himself unavailable for selection and will not represent the country again.
Williams recently pulled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier 2025 in Harare. Following an internal investigation into his unavailability, it was revealed that he has been battling drug addiction and has taken the step to enter rehabilitation.
ZC highlighted Williams’ history of disciplinary issues and frequent unavailability, affecting team readiness and performance. Despite recognizing his decision to seek help, ZC expressed concerns over his withdrawal from team commitments involving potential testing, citing professional and ethical standards.
After careful deliberation, ZC has decided to exclude Williams from future national team considerations. Williams, who has competed in 273 matches for Zimbabwe in various formats over a twenty-year international career, will not have his contract extended beyond 2025.
Since his debut in 2005, Williams has amassed close to 9000 runs and claimed over 150 wickets for Zimbabwe across formats. The board expressed gratitude for his significant contributions to Zimbabwean cricket, acknowledging his pivotal role in key moments and his lasting impact both on and off the field. ZC wished him strength in his recovery journey and success in his future pursuits.
