Filmmaker Ashfaque Nipun has praised the recent election environment and political civility, commending a noticeable shift in tone. Nipun, who had been vocal throughout the movement against the previous government, highlighted the country’s endurance of a harsh and confrontational political atmosphere over an extended period. Following the recent election, where Tarique Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) achieved a decisive victory, the director observed Rahman’s unexpectedly gracious political demeanor.
In a Facebook post, Nipun reflected, “After enduring a harsh and confrontational regime for the past fifteen years, Mr. Tarique Rahman’s political courtesy, despite his significant electoral win, feels almost surreal.” Expressing optimism for the future, he hoped that the chair would not sway this courtesy in the days ahead, emphasizing the importance of restoring civility in both political and social spheres, evident in the recent election through gestures of goodwill between winning and losing candidates from all sides.
A supporter, commenting on Nipun’s post, highlighted the positive aspects of the election, particularly the displays of goodwill between victorious and defeated candidates from all political camps, fostering a positive outlook on the political landscape. The supporter cited Tarique Rahman’s visits to the homes of two opposition leaders as a notable example of this conciliatory spirit.
On the day of the national election, Nipun encouraged citizens to vote in a video message, advocating for a new era in Bangladesh. After casting his own ballot, he remarked on the pleasant voting atmosphere, enthusiastic voters, and cordial officials, expressing satisfaction in participating in the electoral process.
