The Editors’ Council has announced its newly elected executive committee for the upcoming two years, appointing Nurul Kabir from New Age as president and Dewan Hanif Mahmud from Bonik Barta as general secretary. The election was held during the annual general meeting at The Daily Star Centre in Dhaka today.
Tasmima Hossain from Ittefaq was selected as the vice president, and Rusho Mahmud from Suprobhat Bangladesh was appointed as the assistant general secretary. The executive members include Mahfuz Anam from The Daily Star, Matiur Rahman Chowdhury from Manab Zamin, Matiur Rahman from Prothom Alo, Md Mozammel Haque from Karatoa, and AMM Bahauddin from Inqilab.
The AGM was overseen by the outgoing president, Mahfuz Anam. New members of the Council, including Shahed Mohammad Ali from Samakal, Inam Ahmed from The Business Standard, Hasan Hafiz from Kaler Kantho, Abu Taher from Bangladesh Pratidin, and Md Rezaul Karim from Daily Sun, were welcomed.
Members extended congratulations to the new committee and committed to enhancing the Council’s initiatives through collaboration. Newly-elected president Nurul Kabir emphasized the commitment to promoting free, secure, and impartial journalism.
Outgoing president Mahfuz Anam expressed optimism that the Council, under the new leadership, would continue its efforts to uphold ethical journalism standards. He stressed the need to enhance the effectiveness of the editorial institution and highlighted the pivotal role of editors, independent from external influences, in advancing the media landscape in Bangladesh.
