The chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, revealed that the recent killing of notorious criminal Tariq Saif Mamun was motivated by power struggles within Dhaka’s underworld. According to Shafiqul, the murder was orchestrated by Roni, an associate of the infamous gangster Sanjidul Islam Emon, who paid two gunmen Tk 1 lakh each to carry out the attack.
During a press conference at the DMP Media Centre, Shafiqul explained that a group of eight to nine gang members strategically positioned themselves near the court area to ensure the success of the assault. Mamun was fatally shot near the entrance of Dhaka National Medical College Hospital in broad daylight on November 10, shortly after his court appearance.
Shafiqul informed that the DB police have apprehended five suspects, including the two shooters, and confiscated two firearms used in the crime. The arrested individuals are Faruk alias Foysal, Robin alias Piyash, Shamim, Rubel, and Yousuf. Faruk and Robin were identified as the gunmen who directly targeted Mamun.
The DB chief mentioned that the gang had previously attempted to assassinate Mamun unsuccessfully on multiple occasions before finally succeeding in their lethal attack on November 10.
