“Dhaka Jet Crash Raises Airbase Concerns”

-

In Dhaka, a recent fighter jet crash on a school campus has sparked concerns regarding the presence of an airbase in Kurmitola and the training flights conducted from there. These concerns have not been widely discussed in the public sphere.

Following the crash, the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) chief, along with two senior one-star generals, emphasized the necessity of the airbase during public addresses and press conferences. In response to the tragic incident, a nine-member probe commission was established by the government on July 27 to investigate the crash, evaluate damages and casualties, and assign responsibilities within a four-week timeframe.

The establishment of the probe commission and the statements made by the BAF officials have raised unanswered questions regarding the operational need for the airbase in Dhaka and the feasibility of conducting flight training at alternative locations.

Comparative analysis with airbases in other capitals worldwide reveals that Kurmitola’s proximity to Dhaka city center is uncommon. While the operational and strategic reasons for the airbase in Dhaka may be unique, clarity on this matter is lacking. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the safety implications of having residential and educational structures in the flight path near the airbase.

Amid discussions on the need for an alternative airbase and the probe commission’s investigation, critical voices suggest a reevaluation of operational strategies by relevant experts to ensure safety and efficiency.

The probe commission, led by former Secretary AKM Zafar Ullah Khan, lacks aviation and technical expertise, prompting skepticism about its ability to thoroughly investigate the crash. It is essential for the government to provide transparency on the investigative process and any subsequent corrective actions to address systemic weaknesses.

The tragic jet crash has highlighted the importance of approaching the matter with sincerity and diligence to honor the lives lost. Any superficial efforts to address the issue without genuine resolution would be disrespectful to the victims.

The decision-making regarding the airbase and the outcomes of the probe commission remain pivotal issues that demand careful consideration and scrutiny to ensure accountability and safety in the future.
