The tension between numerous clubs in Dhaka and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) escalated on Monday as the clubs threatened a boycott of all leagues in response to the board’s decision to enforce relegation for non-participation.
After a meeting on Monday, 43 clubs based in Dhaka from different divisions penned a letter to the BCB expressing discontent over the recent BCB elections. They declared their intention to abstain from participating in any leagues organized under the current board’s administration.
The letter, signed by clubs across Premier Division, First Division, Second Division, and Third Division, was addressed to BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury. Following the meeting at Dhanmondi, Legends of Rupganj owner Lutfor Rahman Badol emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity among the clubs in pursuing their collective stance.
In their communication, the clubs highlighted a formal complaint lodged on October 22 to the BCB Chief Election Commissioner, citing “grave irregularities and procedural violations” during the BCB elections. They demanded the dissolution of the current board and the conduct of fresh elections.
In response, the BCB swiftly introduced a clause regarding non-participation and withdrawal in the rules, regulations, and playing conditions of all leagues under the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM). The clause stipulates that failure to participate in the league, whether entirely or partially, or withdrawing after the competition’s commencement, would lead to immediate disqualification and relegation for the defaulting team.
The standoff poses implications for the upcoming First Division Cricket League, slated to begin on November 18. Traditionally comprising 20 teams, the league’s format might shrink to 12 teams if the disgruntled clubs proceed with their boycott threat.
