The Democratic Rights Committee has urged for the disclosure of a comprehensive report detailing the actions of the recently disbanded provisional government. They are demanding accountability for those accused of working against the country’s interests during the transitional phase. These demands were voiced during the committee’s general assembly led by Professor Anu Muhammad and were outlined in a press statement released today.
The committee strongly criticized the provisional government’s alleged rushed and opaque interactions with the United States, particularly denouncing a trade deal they deemed detrimental to Bangladesh. They argued that such agreements jeopardize national independence and could lead to economic reliance on the US. The committee called for the elected government to terminate this “unlawful” agreement.
Moreover, concerns were expressed about the appointment of a former advisor from the provisional government to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Members identified this individual as the mastermind behind various agreements deemed “anti-national,” posing a significant threat to the nation.
Additionally, the committee demanded inquiries into incidents of violence following the elections and the reported gang rape in Hatiya. They also pushed for the release of Bawm community members who were allegedly detained on false charges.
Notable attendees at the meeting included Liberation War activist Dipa Dutta, researcher Mahtabuddin Ahmed, writer Chowdhury Mufad Ahmed, trade union leader Satyajit Biswas, Democratic Student Union leader Dilip Roy, lawyer Alaudin Ahmed, filmmaker Akram Khan, and rights activist Marzia Prava, among others.
