“Death penalty ruling a historic moment in Bangladesh’s quest for justice”

-

Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has described the recent ruling against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and ex-Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal as a significant moment in Bangladesh’s history. Following the court’s decision to issue death penalties in a case related to atrocities during the July uprising last year, Nazrul emphasized that the judgment signifies a crucial advancement towards justice for the victims of the movement, including those who lost their lives or suffered injuries.

He specifically mentioned some of the affected individuals and speculated that their families might find solace in the verdict. Expressing his contentment with the outcome, Nazrul highlighted the strength and breadth of the evidence against Hasina and her associates, indicating that any court worldwide would have imposed severe penalties based on such compelling proof.

Nazrul mentioned that the government plans to once again seek Hasina’s extradition from India and warned that India’s continued sheltering of her could be perceived as a hostile act towards Bangladesh. He expressed gratitude towards the chief prosecutor, the prosecution team, and the witnesses involved in the case for their contributions.

Moreover, Nazrul affirmed that the current administration intends to proceed with all ongoing legal proceedings and hoped that any future elected government would uphold the commitment to finalize the judicial process. Regarding other pending cases, Nazrul chose not to provide comments at this time.
