After making rounds on the international film festival circuit, two highly praised movies — “Fereshteh” and “Barir Naam Shahana” — are now hitting the screens for audiences in Bangladesh. Starting today, both films will be shown in various local cinemas. In addition to these releases, the Japanese animated hit “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” has been captivating audiences at Star Cineplex since Tuesday.
“Fereshteh” is a collaborative effort between Bangladesh and Iran, directed by Morteza Atashzamzam. The film narrates the story of a rickshaw puller and his wife who works in a garment factory in Dhaka. It showcases their daily struggles, resilience, and humanity amidst poverty and marginalization. Shot on authentic locations, the film opts for realism over glamour to create a deeper connection with its audience. The main roles are portrayed by Sumon Faruk and Jaya Ahsan, with notable performances from Shahiduzzaman Selim, Shahed Ali, Rikta Nandini Shimu, Shaheen Mridha, and child artist Sathi. Since its completion in 2022, “Fereshteh” has garnered acclaim at various international film festivals. Today onwards, it will be screened in six theaters, including Star Cineplex, Lion Cinemas, and Blockbuster.
Directed by Leesa Gazi, “Barir Naam Shahana” tells the story of Deepa, a divorced woman determined to lead life on her own terms despite societal and familial pressures. Set against a conservative backdrop, the film delves into themes of resilience and rebellion against patriarchal traditions. Anan Siddiqua takes the lead as Deepa, accompanied by performances from Jayanta Chattopadhyay, Lutfor Rahman George, Iresh Zaker, Kazi Ruma, and Kamrunnahar Muni. The film has already been showcased at esteemed festivals in London, Chicago, Melbourne, Birmingham, Rome, and Mumbai. Starting today, it will be screened in nine theaters across Bangladesh.
