India’s cricketer Shreyas Iyer revealed on Thursday that he is steadily improving after sustaining a spleen laceration during a recent one-day match against Australia. The 30-year-old vice-captain experienced intense pain following a remarkable catch to dismiss Alex Carey in the third ODI in Sydney over the weekend. He was quickly taken to the hospital where it was disclosed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India that he had internal bleeding.
In his first public statement since the incident, Iyer shared on social media, “I’m currently in the recovery phase and making progress each day. I deeply appreciate all the kind wishes and support I’ve received, which means a great deal to me. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts.”
India’s T20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, commented on Tuesday that medical professionals described Iyer’s injury as uncommon but emphasized that rare occurrences happen to extraordinary talents. He expressed confidence in Iyer’s swift recovery, stating, “God is with him, and he will bounce back soon, and we will have him back with us.”
Notably, Iyer is not included in India’s T20 squad, which is set to face Australia in the second match of a five-game series at the packed Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday. The series opener in Canberra was affected by rain.
