“Colombian Senator Rescued Amid Election Violence Fears”

-

A Colombian senator was rescued from captors on Tuesday, while the country’s president revealed an assassination attempt on his life ahead of upcoming elections that experts fear may be marred by violence. Senator Aida Quilcue, a renowned Indigenous advocate, was abducted in Cauca, a troubled area known for conflict and coca cultivation, contested by former members of the disbanded FARC rebel group. The 53-year-old senator was freed by Indigenous individuals following her abduction, shortly after her vehicle, accompanied by two bodyguards, was found deserted. “I am safe now,” Quilcue expressed emotionally in a video shared by Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez.
