“Bob Ross Paintings Auctioned to Support Public TV”

-

Thirty paintings by the iconic artist Bob Ross are set to be auctioned to support small and rural public television stations in the U.S. facing federal funding cuts. Bob Ross Inc. President Joan Kowalski highlighted Ross’s mission to make art inclusive for all, with the auction aimed at continuing his legacy.

Bonhams in Los Angeles will kick off the auction by selling three of Ross’s paintings on Nov. 11 as part of their California and Western art sale. Additional auctions will take place in London, New York, Boston, and online. The paintings to be auctioned include works like “Winter’s Peace,” “Home in the Valley,” and “Cliffside.”

Proceeds from the auction will benefit stations utilizing content from American Public Television, helping them cover licensing fees for popular programs like “The Best of Joy of Painting,” “America’s Test Kitchen,” “Julia Child’s French Chef Classics,” and “This Old House.”

Public broadcasting has faced challenges, with a $1.1 billion cut impacting numerous PBS and NPR stations due to government decisions. The late Bob Ross, known for his soothing demeanor and popular show “The Joy of Painting,” passed away in 1995 but continues to inspire viewers worldwide.

Ross’s approach to painting, emphasizing “happy accidents” and tranquility, resonated with audiences. Kowalski emphasized the significance of public TV to Ross, providing an intimate platform for direct interaction with viewers. The auction will feature 30 paintings showcasing Ross’s serene landscapes, capturing his unique artistic style.

Earlier sales of Ross’s paintings at Bonhams in August fetched substantial amounts, surpassing initial valuations. With an estimated total value of $850,000 to $1.4 million for the upcoming auctions, there is potential to raise even more funds for public television.
