BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, expressed worries on the increasing public uncertainty regarding the scheduled national election, stating that such doubts could hinder the country’s democratic progress. He highlighted that during the previous autocratic rule, people showed little interest in national elections, but questions now arise under the interim government about the election timeline.
Speaking at the launch of BNP’s membership collection and renewal drive overseas, Tarique emphasized that this uncertainty was unexpected during the interim government’s tenure. He criticized the Awami League for allegedly manipulating the electoral system over the past 15 years to prevent BNP’s success, raising concerns about potential efforts to hinder BNP’s victory even in the current political landscape.
Tarique urged unity among believers in Bangladeshi nationalism and nationalist forces to counter any attempts to thwart BNP’s progress. He emphasized BNP’s commitment to national unity against fascism and its cooperation with the interim government while cautioning about evolving challenges to democracy.
Encouraging democratic political parties to remain vigilant against manipulative tactics, Tarique highlighted the importance of distinguishing between strategic actions and deceptive practices to avoid succumbing to undemocratic forces. He affirmed BNP’s readiness for the forthcoming national election, with nominations for BNP or BNP-supported candidates in progress across the country.
Acknowledging the competitive nomination process within the party, Tarique stressed the need for acceptance and unity among BNP leaders and supporters for the greater good of the nation and democracy. He underscored the party’s decision-making authority and quoted Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman on prioritizing the party and country’s interests over individual aspirations.
Tarique announced that BNP’s nominated candidates would be revealed gradually, urging collective efforts to secure their victory while cautioning against internal conflicts that may benefit adversaries. He reminded aspirants that their allegiance to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia’s ideologies should guide their actions for the party’s success, democracy’s advancement, and the nation’s prosperity.
