BNP General Secretary Praises Barrister Moudud Ahmed’s Democratic Legacy

-

BNP’s General Secretary, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, expressed concerns about the current state of instability in Bangladesh. He emphasized the need for individuals like Barrister Moudud Ahmed who could have provided guidance during these turbulent times. Fakhrul made these comments during a book launch event for “Demise of Democracy,” authored by the late Barrister Moudud Ahmed, held at a hotel in Dhaka.

Fakhrul also expressed regret that Moudud could not witness the downfall of what he referred to as a dictatorial regime under Hasina’s leadership, a scenario Moudud had hoped to see. Recalling his time spent in jail with Barrister Moudud in 2012, Fakhrul praised Moudud’s unwavering dedication to writing, citing an incident where Moudud immediately began writing upon being incarcerated.

He commended Moudud as an impartial historian, noting that while there may have been criticisms of Moudud as a politician, his historical writings remained largely unchallenged. Fakhrul shared a personal story showcasing Moudud’s steadfast commitment to democratic ideals, recounting Moudud’s legal actions in the early days of Bangladesh to secure the release of individuals unjustly detained during the establishment of a one-party system.

Fakhrul concluded by asserting that Barrister Moudud Ahmed, despite his varying political stances over time, consistently strived to uphold democratic values. He encouraged a thorough examination of Moudud’s legacy, believing that his commitment to democracy remained a defining aspect of his political career.
