BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman emphasized the importance of national unity, stating that any division would weaken Bangladesh during a critical period following the recent parliamentary election. Speaking at a press conference after his party’s significant victory, Tarique stressed the need for unity despite differing paths and opinions, highlighting that national unity is the country’s strength while division is a weakness.
He urged political forces to remain united to prevent any resurgence of autocracy and to safeguard Bangladesh from becoming subservient. Tarique acknowledged that misunderstandings might have arisen during the election but emphasized the importance of avoiding revenge and ensuring disputes do not escalate.
Tarique outlined justice as a cornerstone of his future government’s rule, seeking cooperation from all political entities to build a secure and compassionate Bangladesh. Emphasizing the maintenance of peace and order, he underscored the necessity of normalcy in law enforcement and zero tolerance for violence and wrongdoing.
The BNP chairman acknowledged the challenges inherited by the next government, including a fragile economy and deteriorating law and order left by the previous regime. He hailed the victory as a triumph for democracy and the people, stressing the importance of upholding the will of the electorate.
Tarique expressed gratitude to all candidates, emphasizing the role of political parties in upholding democracy. He highlighted the need for responsible roles from both the government and the opposition to strengthen democratic institutions.
Addressing the participating political parties, Tarique emphasized the significance of their ideas and views. He and BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury fielded questions from journalists, with Tarique attributing their success to garnering public support and creating a conducive environment.
Regarding future plans, Tarique highlighted the revival of the economy, law enforcement, and the depoliticization of institutions as immediate priorities. He emphasized listening to the youth while addressing broader societal concerns and promoting inclusive economic opportunities.
Tarique affirmed a people-centric foreign policy, prioritizing Bangladesh’s interests in relations with India and China. He underscored mutual interests as the guiding principle and emphasized the BNP’s commitment to multilateralism and non-interference in its foreign relations.
On the issue of the International Crimes Tribunal verdicts, Tarique deferred to the judiciary, advocating for the separation of powers between the executive, legislature, and judiciary. Ismail Jabiullah moderated the event on behalf of the BNP chairperson.
