Blind Voters Travel Miles to Cast Ballots

-

Three blind individuals made a determined effort to exercise their voting rights by traveling to different districts to cast their ballots. Mohammad Jewel, Monir Hossain, and Mohammad Jasim overcame daily challenges to reach polling stations in Narayanganj. Jasim has been blind since birth, while Jewel and Monir lost their sight in childhood due to illness. Despite residing in Dhaka, they remain registered voters in Narayanganj.

After voting at various polling centers, they expressed satisfaction in participating in the electoral process. They mentioned the significance of being recognized as equal citizens by fulfilling their civic duty. Monir highlighted the joy of casting a vote and reconnecting with friends in Narayanganj, comparing the experience to the festive atmosphere of Eid.

The men emphasized the importance of support for individuals with disabilities from the new government. Jasim stressed the need for proper education for their children and financial assistance to alleviate the need for begging. Monir raised concerns about the inadequacy of the current disability allowance, urging policymakers to address the issue by determining a more practical monthly stipend.

Following their voting experience and sharing their expectations for the future, the trio were aided by a local woman into a battery-operated rickshaw for their journey back home.
