Beware the Dangers of Yes Men in Political Power

-

Political power is a magnet for individuals with diverse motivations, as it controls economic resources and opportunities. When a leader ascends to power, especially after a significant electoral win, the allure intensifies. Many seek proximity to authority to bask in its prestige. While some offer competence and conviction, others provide experience and moral fortitude. Yet, there are those whose main agenda is personal benefit from being near power. Among these, the most perilous are the “Yes Men” who never challenge or question decisions, feeding leaders only what they want to hear.

The recent landslide victory of the BNP, led by Tarique Rahman, has transformed the political landscape of Bangladesh. While seen as a chance to bolster democratic institutions, such overwhelming mandates can pose risks. Leaders may succumb to the illusion of invincibility, leading to a shift from honest feedback to flattery and blind loyalty. Constructive criticism, though uncomfortable, is crucial for preventing costly errors and fostering effective governance. Unfortunately, dissent is often misconstrued as disloyalty, hindering open dialogue and fostering fear and silence, which are detrimental to any administration.

Leaders surrounded by individuals willing to challenge them are better equipped to govern effectively than those shielded by constant approval. The unchecked ego, particularly when bolstered by power, favors harmony over truth. As Yes Men tighten their hold, they control access, silencing alternative viewpoints and portraying critics as adversaries. This isolation from diverse perspectives leads to arrogance and a sense of entitlement, blinding leaders to their fallibility.

Bangladesh’s history is a stark reminder of the perils of prolonged power coupled with sycophancy. Sheikh Hasina’s extended tenure exemplifies how insular leadership, equating criticism with disloyalty, weakens judgment and suppresses public grievances. Over time, a facade of stability replaces honest engagement with reality, ultimately resulting in a sudden collapse that was foreseeable to vigilant citizens.

Electoral landslides can delude leaders into believing they alone embody the people’s will, diverting elections from accountability to self-validation. Bangladesh’s past experiences highlight the dangers of concentrating power, stifling dissent, and fostering corruption under the guise of national interest.

The current mandate of the BNP presents an opportunity to rebuild institutions, regain trust, and reshape political culture. Effective governance hinges on leaders who embrace dissent, foster debate, and uphold independent thinking. Advisers should be valued for their competence and integrity, not just loyalty. Humility and an acknowledgment that electoral success do not equate to moral infallibility are vital for sustainable governance.

Leaders must shun Yes Men not only for their own good but also to uphold the health of institutions. Internal discourse within political parties, independent functioning of institutions, and open expression by the media and civil society fortify governance rather than undermine it. The silence, not the clamor of criticism, precipitates the downfall of leaders.

As Bangladesh embarks on a new political era, leadership will be tested by its willingness to heed dissenting voices. Nations suffer most when leaders prioritize comfort over truth. To break the cycle of political recurrence, those in power must resist the allure of unwavering praise. True leadership strength lies in the ability to confront uncomfortable truths, making it essential to beware of Yes Men as they often signify impending decline.
