The birth anniversary of renowned poet Jibanananda Das was commemorated in Barishal yesterday through a series of events arranged by local poets, writers, and cultural enthusiasts.
Pragati Lekhak Sangha and Barishal Kabita Parishad members gathered in the morning to lay floral tributes at a mural of the poet located at the Jibanananda Das Memorial Auditorium and Library, situated in his ancestral home.
During a discussion meeting overseen by poet Tapankor Chakraborty, participants advocated for the establishment of a research center, an extensive library, and a museum dedicated to Jibanananda Das at his ancestral residence, Sarbananda Bhaban, which currently houses a section of the Department of Public Health Engineering office.
It was emphasized that Jibanananda Das, who taught English at Government Brajamohan College from 1935 to 1946, lacks proper recognition despite having a dormitory named after him. The speakers expressed concern over the insufficient efforts to promote research and study of his literary contributions.
One speaker highlighted that visitors from outside Barishal often express disappointment due to the inadequate preservation of the poet’s legacy in the area. Jibanananda Das was hailed not only as a significant figure in Bengali literature but also as a unique voice in global literary circles. The pivotal role of researcher Clinton B Seely in introducing Jibanananda Das’ works to English-speaking readers was also acknowledged.
The event saw the participation of various individuals including Tunurani Karmakar, Apurba Gautam, Abul Kalam Azad, Shovon Karmakar, and Subhash Chandra Das.
