“Bangladesh’s Path to Progress: Striving for Freedom and Accountability”

-

As we commemorate the first anniversary of the July uprising, it is crucial to reflect on the courage and selflessness that led to this significant event. To fortify our newly attained freedom and advance our progress, we must remain vigilant and promptly thwart any efforts to establish a hereditary dynasty.

The nation anticipates notable advancements in the nation-building process after facing setbacks in the past two decades. Our journey towards democracy has been repeatedly hindered by elected officials, notably in the years 1974-75, 2005-06, and post the 2014 elections. In Bangladesh, elections evoke mixed emotions, with only four out of twelve elections since independence being regarded as “free and fair.” The remaining elections have been marred by violence, protests, and allegations of electoral malpractice.

The readiness of the country for elections and a new elected government is being questioned. Calls on social media have urged the interim government (IG), particularly Prof Yunus, to prolong their stay. Prof Adil Khan, in his article “Bangladesh: Then and Now,” underscores the improved efficiency in public services, reflecting the sentiments of individuals experiencing fewer bureaucratic hurdles.

Reports suggest that the younger generation is disinterested in politics, as highlighted in a recent national survey conducted by SANEM. The survey revealed that 83 percent of young people aged 15-35 lack interest in political affairs.

It is imperative for our intellectual leaders to delve into the reasons behind this disinterest and contemplate the possibility of extending the IG’s term. An op-ed by Bobby Hajjaj reflects a sense of disillusionment amidst ongoing discussions on reforms and the electoral process.

Despite perceived slow progress and political maneuvering, there have been significant achievements, including the removal of external influences and the introduction of reform proposals by the IG. Notable proposals include term limits for the prime minister, caretaker government roles, proportional representation in parliament, and the establishment of an appointments commission.

Positive sentiments are echoed by intellectuals, with Professor Mushtaq Khan acknowledging progress in politics, economics, and press freedom. However, he stresses the importance of addressing past wrongs to ensure accountability and deter future abuses of power.

The use of force by rulers to maintain authority remains a puzzle in contemporary society. The disregard for norms against violence, as noted by Yale Law School professors, underscores the dangerous belief that might justifies any action.

The nation must commit to preventing the tragedies of the past and strive for a future free from oppression and violence. The IG must focus on implementing reforms and ensuring transparent elections, while the new PM must uphold principles of freedom and integrity, vowing to combat corruption effectively.
