Curly hair has often been subject to misconceptions, from being perceived as difficult to manage and unappealing, to the notion that it requires expensive upkeep. These stereotypes have discouraged many from embracing their natural hair texture. However, Kazria Kayes, who used to regularly straighten her hair, stumbled upon the Curly Girl Method (CGM), embraced it, and revolutionized the curly-haired community in Bangladesh. She founded the Facebook support group, Curly Girl Bangladesh by Kazria K, and the Curl Station on Instagram, where she assists women in effectively managing and preserving their curls.
Kazria debunked the misconception that CGM is a costly and time-consuming process, emphasizing that after eight years of practicing it, she found it to be neither. She also highlighted that CGM is not exclusive to women, as it is equally applicable to men and boys.
Central to the CGM is understanding one’s hair type, which can range from wavy to curly to coily, falling within the range of 2A to 4C. While some experts suggest that Type C curls benefit the most from this method, Kazria encourages individuals with types 2A to 4A to embrace their curls confidently.
The CGM involves avoiding damaging agents like sulfates, silicones, mineral oils, and alcohol, which can strip moisture from naturally drier curly hair. Instead, it promotes the use of moisturizing and nourishing ingredients while steering clear of heat styling tools and traditional towel drying.
Contrary to popular belief, the CGM is not an arduous process. While the products needed for curly hair may differ, the routine itself is no more burdensome than managing straight hair. Kazria recommends washing hair once a week using sulfate-free shampoo, silicone-free conditioner, and air-drying with a t-shirt to maintain natural moisture.
Styling curly hair involves applying curling cream and gel to damp hair to enhance and define curls. Additionally, Kazria suggests co-washing hair instead of daily shampooing, especially for oily scalps, by mixing a small amount of shampoo with conditioner for a gentle cleanse.
Maintaining curly hair can involve using natural products such as reetha powder or lentil water for washing and herbal packs for deep conditioning. Kazria shares her deep conditioning mask recipe using aloe gel blended with boiled sago, and praises flaxseed gel as a superior styling product, emphasizing its effectiveness over commercial gels.
Acknowledging the challenging transition period in adopting the CGM, Kazria advises against using heat styling tools or chemical products, which may lead to temporary hair fall. However, she reassures that this phase allows the hair to recover from previous damage and embrace its natural growth pattern, ultimately resulting in a stunning, healthy curly mane.
