Adnan Al Rajeev’s highly regarded short film “Ali” from Bangladesh has been chosen to be part of the Festival du nouveau cinĂ©ma (FNC) in Quebec, Canada, which is renowned for showcasing avant-garde and indie cinema globally. The 15-minute film will be featured in the International Competition section and will be shown at the Quebec Cinematheque’s Fernand-Seguin Room on October 12 and October 17.
The film’s team shared their excitement on social media about the official selection of “Ali” for the prestigious Festival du nouveau cinĂ©ma – FNC in Quebec, Canada, recognizing it as a significant achievement for independent storytelling from Bangladesh on the world stage. This selection not only acknowledges the film but also highlights the impact of Bangladeshi cinema internationally.
This latest recognition adds to the growing list of accolades for “Ali.” The short film was previously selected for the official short-film program at the 70th Valladolid International Film Week (Seminci) in Spain, scheduled to take place from October 24 to November 1. Additionally, “Ali” received a Special Mention from the jury in the short-film category at the esteemed 78th Cannes Film Festival, marking a significant milestone for Bangladeshi cinema.
The narrative of “Ali” unfolds in a traditional coastal town where public singing by women is prohibited. The story revolves around a young boy gifted with a remarkable female voice who conceals his talent while secretly aspiring to participate in a singing competition. Al Amin portrays the titular character, with filming conducted in Sylhet in November last year.
The film’s production team comprises Tanvir Hossain from Bangladesh and Christine D Leon from the Philippines, with Runout Films handling line production. This project reflects a rising trend in international collaborations for Bangladeshi short films, blending local stories with global partnerships.
Director Adnan Al Rajeev described the film as resonating with individuals who choose silence amid pressure. The producers aim to expand the reach of ‘Ali’ in Europe through the screening at Valladolid, fostering greater exposure and appreciation for the film across the continent.
