“Bangladesh Ministry of Labour Unveils 22-Point Action Plan”

-

The Ministry of Labour and Employment has put forth a comprehensive 22‑point action plan to be executed within a span of 180 days, in alignment with the electoral promises of the BNP government. This strategic roadmap was formally agreed upon during a workshop held at the ministry’s conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat, under the guidance of Secretary Md Sanowar Jahan Bhuiya. Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury graced the occasion as the chief guest.

During the workshop, the minister stressed the importance of submitting weekly progress reports on the implementation of the manifesto, which will be closely monitored. A significant decision taken was to convert the Bangladesh Labour Ordinance, 2025, into a full-fledged law by March 31, 2026, and to finalize the recruitment of 122 recommended inspectors for the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE).

Further key milestones include the revision of labor regulations as per the existing labor laws, the enactment of legislation to combat child and forced labor, and the establishment of a National Social Dialogue Forum by June 30, 2026. Additionally, deadlines were set for the introduction of digital trade union registration by July 15, 2026, the establishment of employment exchanges at district and upazila levels, the update of the national employment survey by July 30, and the enforcement of minimum wage regulations in hotels and restaurants by June 30.

The action plan also entails the formation of anti‑harassment committees in all RMG factories, the specification of minimum wages in the tannery, hotel, and iron foundry sectors, and the provision of financial aid for workers from welfare funds. State Minister Nurul Haque Nur also shared insights during the workshop, which saw the participation of senior officials from the ministry and its associated departments.
