“Bangladesh Cricket Board Struggles to Name New Test Captain”

-

The Bangladesh Cricket Board is currently facing challenges in appointing a new Test captain following Najmul Hossain Shanto’s resignation from the position. Shanto stepped down from the role, mentioning the BCB’s strategy of having separate captains for each format as the reason for his decision. Despite Shanto being a top candidate for the Test captaincy, reports suggest that he has already declined the opportunity to reclaim the position.

Chairman of Cricket Operations, Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, refrained from commenting on the captaincy situation, leaving the BCB to consider other potential candidates like Litton Das, Mominul Haque, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Miraz currently leads the ODI team, but with the team struggling, it may be challenging to assign him the Test captaincy as well. BCB President Aminul Islam mentioned that there are no strict rules regarding having three different captains, keeping Miraz and Litton as viable options for the Test captaincy.

Litton, who has been successful leading the T20I squad, expressed interest in the Test captaincy if approached by the board. Similarly, Mehidy Miraz and Mominul Haque have also shown willingness to take on the role if offered. The BCB has been deliberating over the captaincy issue since Shanto’s resignation in June, but with the upcoming Ireland Tests, the board is now actively working to resolve the dilemma.

Former Test captain Khaled Mahmud Sujon emphasized the importance of carefully selecting captains and providing them with ample time to prepare for the role. He suggested that Litton Das could be a suitable choice for the Test captaincy if Shanto and Mominul are not interested. The uncertainty surrounding the captaincy decision has raised questions about convincing Shanto to reconsider his resignation, with some speculating that circumstances may change to alter his decision.
