“Bangladesh Advances Postgraduate Education for Economic Growth”

-

Bangladesh is making strides towards exiting the Least Developed Country (LDC) status, but it needs to implement fresh strategies to boost economic growth. Traditional production factors may not suffice for the required growth rate. Postgraduate education plays a crucial role in enhancing Total Factor Productivity (TFP), which drives economic growth through technological advancements. To position itself as a technology innovator, Bangladesh must cultivate a substantial pool of science and engineering talent through postgraduate programs.

While undergraduate education focuses on knowledge dissemination, postgraduate education involves generating new knowledge through research and disseminating advanced information. Postgraduate students engage in cutting-edge research, producing theses that lead to innovation. The benefits of postgraduate education are extensive, equipping professionals to adopt advanced technology, manage high-tech projects, and shape national policies. By concentrating on issues of national significance, Master’s and PhD graduates can develop homegrown solutions, steering Bangladesh towards becoming a technology producer.

The density of PhD holders reflects a country’s intellectual capacity. Knowledge-based economies like Switzerland and Nordic countries boast high PhD densities exceeding 10,000 per million. Establishing research universities that prioritize postgraduate education and research can enhance Bangladesh’s talent base. These institutions can address critical national issues and function as innovation hubs, driving economic growth.

To ensure quality, research universities should adhere to global academic standards while tackling local challenges. Collaboration between academia and industry is crucial for transforming postgraduate research into innovative solutions. Industry-academia partnerships can be fostered by sharing industry challenges as research topics, introducing industry-focused postgraduate programs, and engaging industry experts in research supervision.

Attracting top-tier students to postgraduate programs is essential for national development. Creating an environment where these professionals can thrive and contribute to the nation’s progress is imperative. Employing postgraduate degree holders in various sectors, such as R&D and policy, can reduce reliance on foreign professionals and boost investor confidence. The government can support this by offering incentives like tax breaks to industries employing postgraduates.

To drive knowledge-driven governance, the government should increase the recruitment of PhD-level professionals in specialized civil services and advisory roles. Leveraging postgraduate talent in science and engineering can propel Bangladesh towards technological innovation and sustained economic growth. Building a robust ecosystem for highly qualified professionals is essential for the nation’s development.

As Bangladesh transitions out of the LDC status, embracing technological innovation and nurturing a skilled workforce are vital for continued economic progress. Increasing the number of well-trained postgraduates is not just beneficial but a strategic imperative for sustaining growth and fostering innovation in the nation.
