The ongoing rivalry between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami is seen as an opportunity for the Awami League to strengthen its political position, according to Nasiruddin Patwary, Chief Coordinator of the National Citizen Party (NCP). Patwary expressed these views during a discussion on “July Charter: Farmers’ Deprivation and the Question of Justice,” held by Jatiya Krishak Shakti at NCP’s temporary central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka.
Patwary highlighted the current dynamics, pointing out that amidst the conflicts between Jamaat and BNP, there are efforts to involve Chuppu (Mohammed Shahabuddin) in signing the July Charter, which he believes would be unfavorable for the people of Bangladesh. He also noted that Sheikh Hasina is seeking to capitalize on the disunity within the opposition for her return to power, emphasizing the need for constitutional amendments to prevent the perpetuation of authoritarianism.
Discussing the upcoming referendum, the NCP leader emphasized the importance of government and political parties engaging in dialogues to enhance the Election Commission’s capabilities. Patwary cautioned that if both the referendum and national elections occur simultaneously without proper EC management, it could lead to further instability in the country.
Patwary criticized the perceived hypocrisy in politics, calling out a political leader for prioritizing potato prices over the referendum while accusing the leader’s nominee for parliament of exploiting farmers, driving up potato prices, and controlling syndicates. He urged for ethical conduct and vowed to oppose any attempts at subjugating the people through servile politics or dynastic rule, rallying the youth to stand united against such practices.
