AMD and Meta Join Forces for Massive AI Infrastructure Boost

-

AMD and Meta have recently announced a new long-term collaboration to deploy AMD Instinct GPUs, with a capacity of up to six gigawatts, to enhance Meta’s AI infrastructure. This partnership, as per an official statement from AMD, builds upon their existing strategic alliance and synchronizes plans for silicon, systems, and software to provide tailored AI platforms for Meta’s specific needs. The initial shipment for the first gigawatt deployment is set to commence in the latter part of 2026, utilizing a custom AMD Instinct GPU based on the MI450 architecture and 6th Gen AMD EPYC CPUs, running ROCm software.

Lisa Su, the CEO of AMD, emphasized the significance of this multi-year collaboration spanning various generations of Instinct GPUs, EPYC CPUs, and AI systems designed for Meta’s workloads to offer high performance and energy efficiency. In response, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, highlighted the partnership as a crucial move towards diversifying their computational resources.

Moreover, Meta is set to become a primary client for two upcoming EPYC processors. Under the agreement, AMD has granted Meta a performance-related warrant for a maximum of 160 million shares of AMD common stock, structured to vest upon achieving milestones associated with GPU shipments and linked to specific stock price thresholds.

This alliance mirrors other recent industry developments, such as Alphabet’s arrangement with Anthropic for personalized chips and AMD’s collaboration with OpenAI in the prior year. Notably, Meta has also secured a deal with Nvidia for purchasing millions of AI chips independently.
