Artificial intelligence has achieved a significant breakthrough in the music industry as Xania Monet emerges as the first artificial artist to secure enough airplay to debut on a Billboard chart. According to Billboard, Monet gained recognition after releasing her initial tracks in the summer of 2025. Her singles, “Let Go, Let God,” made it to the Hot Gospel Songs chart, while “How Was I Supposed to Know” appeared on the Hot R&B Songs chart.
Monet has amassed over 146,000 followers on Instagram, signaling her increasing popularity. Described as an “AI persona portrayed as a modern R&B singer” on her Apple Music profile, Monet was conceptualized by Telisha Nikki Jones, a poet from Mississippi. Jones pens the lyrics for Monet’s songs and employs a generative AI music tool named “Suno” to craft the music. Monet’s debut album, “Unfolded,” featuring 24 tracks, was released in August, followed by a seven-song EP titled “Pieces Left Behind” in September.
A press release lauded Monet’s vocals as “smooth, soulful, and remarkably human-like.” Romel Murphy, Monet’s manager, emphasized to CNN that AI complements rather than replaces the artist, presenting a novel frontier where creativity and the human experience remain central.
Billboard noted that several AI or AI-assisted artists have recently made appearances on its music charts, with the actual count potentially higher given the challenge of discerning AI involvement in music creation. Despite this, a growing concern among human musicians regarding the implications of AI on their craft has surfaced. Singer Kehlani expressed disapproval of the trend in a now-deleted TikTok video, citing her skepticism towards an AI R&B artist who secured a lucrative deal without direct involvement in the creative process.
