Lionel Messi, known for outclassing the world’s top defenders for two decades, has amassed a staggering eight Ballon d’Or awards and a World Cup victory, making his career almost surreal. However, as Messi celebrates another year on June 24, it’s essential to reflect on his humble beginnings as a quiet boy from Rosario who faced numerous challenges.
Here are five lesser-known facts about Messi’s childhood. At the age of five, he was initially rejected by his local club Grandoli for being too small until his grandmother, Celia, intervened and convinced the coach to give him a chance. She remained a constant source of support until her passing when Messi was ten.
Diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency at ten, Messi’s family couldn’t afford the expensive treatment. Despite being turned down by River Plate in Argentina, Barcelona stepped in, offering to cover all expenses under the condition that Messi and his family relocate to Spain. In a unique turn of events, the agreement between Messi and Barcelona was famously written on a napkin during a casual lunch meeting, which later sold at auction for a significant sum.
Upon joining Barcelona’s La Masia Academy at 13, Messi’s parents returned to Argentina, leaving him to navigate a new country and culture alone. Struggling with the language and social interactions, Messi’s introverted nature led many to believe he was mute, causing him to endure loneliness and homesickness initially.
Before his move to Barcelona, Messi’s talent was evident at Newell’s Old Boys in Rosario, where his exceptional skills often led to disputes from opposing coaches questioning his age due to his small stature. With an impressive record of nearly 500 youth goals, Messi’s prowess was undeniable, even at a young age.
Despite facing numerous obstacles throughout his childhood, including rejection, financial struggles, and loneliness, Messi’s unwavering determination and resilience propelled him to greatness, endearing him to fans worldwide.
