CIA intelligence suggesting Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s attendance at a gathering of top Iranian officials played a crucial role in guiding the US and Israeli strikes that resulted in the death of Iran’s supreme leader, as per a recent report by the New York Times. The strikes in the capital city of Tehran led to Khamenei’s demise, a fact confirmed by Iranian state media. The American intelligence agency had been monitoring Khamenei for an extended period and discovered that a meeting of high-ranking Iranian officials was scheduled for Saturday morning at a key leadership venue in Tehran. While the initial plan was to carry out the strikes at night, adjustments were made based on the CIA intelligence received. The US shared this vital information with Israel, which then orchestrated the attack on the Iranian leadership. The operation commenced around 6:00 am in Israel (0400 GMT), with long-range missiles hitting the compound at approximately 9:40 am. Among the casualties were not only Khamenei but also two prominent Iranian military figures: General Mohammad Pakpour, the chief of the Revolutionary Guards, and another key security adviser, Ali Shamkhani, as confirmed by Iran’s judiciary. President Donald Trump, in a statement on his Truth Social platform, credited the successful operation to precise intelligence and advanced tracking systems, underscoring the collaboration with Israel. The decision to launch the joint air and naval operation was triggered by the confirmation of Khamenei’s meeting with senior advisors, as shared by two US sources and an anonymous US official. Although the exact location of the meeting was undisclosed, satellite imagery later revealed the destruction of Khamenei’s heavily guarded compound in Tehran. The aftermath of Khamenei’s demise and its implications on Iran’s leadership structure are yet to unfold. However, the US Central Intelligence Agency, in a pre-strike evaluation, assessed that hardline elements within the IRGC could potentially succeed Khamenei, according to informed sources.
