Kinokuniya, a well-known Japanese bookstore chain, is preparing to launch its inaugural store in Bangladesh at Centrepoint Uttara on June 19. This store will offer a diverse selection of 40,000 books, encompassing genres such as fiction, non-fiction, manga, children’s literature, arts, business, education, lifestyle, and academic resources.
Established in Tokyo in 1927, Kinokuniya has expanded its presence to various locations including Singapore, Dubai, Sydney, and prominent cities across Asia. Widely recognized as a hub for readers, researchers, and knowledge enthusiasts, the brand has garnered a strong reputation over the years.
Spanning across 5,000 square feet in Dhaka, the store will house an extensive range of English language imports alongside Bangla language titles. Additionally, the establishment features Marco Polo’s Cafe, where patrons can enjoy a variety of beverages and snacks while perusing their chosen reads.
The inauguration ceremony of Kinokuniya Bangladesh saw the presence of key figures such as Hiroyoshi Kageyama, Director of Kinokuniya, Khondaker Zayed Ahsan, Managing Director of IPCO Developments (Bangladesh) Ltd & IPCO Hotels Ltd, Mashrur Arefin, CEO of City Bank PLC and author, and Sabrina Shaheed, Principal of Sir John Wilson School.
Reflecting on the store’s opening, Hiroyoshi Kageyama emphasized Bangladesh’s promising cultural landscape and the community’s deep-rooted appreciation for the arts as driving forces for establishing the store.
Expressing concern over declining book interest, Mashrur Arefin noted the positive impact an initiative like Kinokuniya’s arrival could have on rekindling a passion for reading among individuals.
For Ahsan, the venture holds personal significance as a book enthusiast. Drawing inspiration from his experiences in Kinokuniya stores in Singapore and Thailand, he aims to offer a similar enriching experience to the people of Bangladesh.
Sabrina Shaheed, who reminisced about her book collecting days, highlighted the shifting trend towards bookstore visits, viewing Kinokuniya as a revitalizing addition to the local literary scene.
Ahsan revealed plans to expand the store’s collection by incorporating books from India and the UK, enhancing accessibility and diversifying the range to cater to a broader audience.
