In response, Ziauddin Hyder, an adviser to BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman, defended the government’s actions by stating that the BNP is committed to preventing the misuse of tobacco products. Despite growing pressure from anti-tobacco groups, an ordinance was approved in December, expanding the definition of tobacco products and introducing new regulations under the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act. The ordinance prohibits the production, import, distribution, and use of various tobacco-related products and imposes penalties for violations.
The health ministry, following recommendations from a parliamentary committee, removed provisions related to e-cigarettes from the ordinance before presenting it to parliament. However, this decision faced criticism from anti-tobacco organizations and international bodies like the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, who raised concerns about the risks associated with e-cigarettes, particularly for young people.
Despite these objections, the parliament passed the act lifting the ban on e-cigarettes, and a gazette was issued. Additionally, the provision restricting tobacco cultivation on high-yield agricultural land was dropped from another enacted ordinance.
