This marked their second meeting following Mamdani’s election win last year, with Mamdani being a Democrat and Trump a Republican.
Mamdani shared a photo with Trump on social media, expressing optimism about expanding housing in New York City. During the meeting, Mamdani addressed concerns about the detention of Columbia University student Elmina Aghayeva by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, leading to Trump assuring Mamdani of her imminent release.
Following Mamdani’s intervention, the federal Homeland Security Department confirmed Aghayeva’s release and initiated removal proceedings. Despite their differing policy stances, Mamdani and Trump found common ground in discussing housing affordability during their previous meeting in November.
Both leaders have highlighted the need to make housing more accessible, with Trump emphasizing this issue in his recent State of the Union address and introducing policies to tackle the housing crisis. However, challenges such as high mortgage rates and insufficient housing supply continue to hinder efforts to improve affordability, impacting families nationwide.
