At the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday, Bangladesh’s training session proceeded as usual. The players started with fielding drills on the main wicket and then moved to the academy ground for net practice.
A point of interest was the presence of left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, who is not included in the squads for the upcoming series against Australia. As the first ODI approaches on Tuesday, focus has shifted to the type of pitches being readied for the matches. There is curiosity about whether Bangladesh will stick to the sporting pitches seen in recent series or opt for more spin-friendly tracks.
Taijul’s participation sparked speculation, although team management sources downplayed it as a routine occurrence. The team’s primary spinners, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Rishad Hossain, and Tanvir Islam, were also actively bowling in the nets.
According to a member of the selection panel, Taijul may have been brought in at the team management’s request. There is speculation that his presence could simulate the challenge posed by Australia’s left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, who performed well against Pakistan.
The pitches currently being prepared show a hint of grass, especially the one designated for the second ODI. The extent of grass and its impact on seamers remain uncertain, with final evaluations expected closer to match day.
A team management source hinted that the pitches would be similar to those in the New Zealand and Pakistan series. The first ODI pitch seems less grassy, potentially favoring spinners as the game progresses.
Bangladesh’s batting unit might face a tougher test if the pitches are more balanced. Litton Das showed good form in the nets, while Tawhid Hridoy and Mosaddek Hossain also demonstrated their capabilities, with Mosaddek eyeing a comeback after four years.
In terms of team selection, if Mosaddek plays, either Soumya Sarkar or Saif Hassan might sit out, with the latter being the likely candidate. Mustafizur Rahman and pace sensation Nahid Rana were also active in training, focusing on their roles in the upcoming series.
On the Australian side, a new member is expected to join on Sunday, but whether it’s a batter or a spinner remains unknown. The status of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head’s inclusion in the squad is also pending confirmation by the team management. An update is anticipated on Monday morning.
