“Uncovering Bangladesh’s Hidden Gems: Journey of Content Creator RK Sohan”

-

In the realm of content creation, viewers have encountered a plethora of video genres. Yet, amidst the cacophony of loud, overly dramatic, and excessively edited content, there exists a type that compels one to pause – content that exudes a sense of genuine observation and understanding. This essence is vividly captured when conversing with RK Sohan.

Although recognized primarily as a travel content creator, labeling him as such seems limiting. Beyond crafting travel content, he delves into documenting narratives of individuals, culinary delights, forgotten traditions, and local wisdom. He sheds light on peculiar customs often overlooked by many. Whether it’s the unique method of cooking lentils in a remote region or the preservation techniques of paddy elsewhere, Sohan uncovers the essence of these intricacies. From a palm cake in Akhaura to jar-fishing and mud biscuits, his narratives almost sound fantastical until one immerses oneself in the local culture and listens attentively.

Sohan’s journey did not commence with grand influencer aspirations but rather through practical fieldwork. Initially engaging with an NGO in 2021, his responsibilities led him to remote locales where he documented project details and interviewed beneficiaries. Amidst the mundane tasks, a transformation occurred.

“I stumbled upon countless unseen local traditions,” remarks the intrepid traveler. “I began documenting and sharing these discoveries, which garnered significant interest.”

This genuine curiosity marks the humble beginnings of a creator. The realization that his endeavors could transcend personal interest surfaced during a challenging period in his life.

Following a breakup, a trip to Cox’s Bazar for solace resulted in an unexpected milestone – a video reaching 300,000 views. This unprecedented surge in viewership propelled him forward. Subsequent videos on the iftar market in Old Dhaka and his hometown of Saidpur garnered over a million views almost instantly.

“That moment inspired me to take this endeavor seriously,” he reflects.

Numbers merely scratch the surface of Sohan’s narrative. In a landscape saturated with viral creators, mere reach does not guarantee depth. What sets Sohan apart is his meticulous research methodology. He doesn’t merely capture the beauty of a place through a lens but seeks out untold stories, what he terms as “market gaps.”

“Our research unfolds in three stages,” he elaborates. “Initially, we scour the web for existing content. Subsequently, I receive calls from locals – fishermen, boatmen, villagers – who share invaluable insights unattainable online. Lastly, we leverage AI tools to validate information and unearth deeper insights.”

What distinguishes his work is the emphasis on research, constituting 90% of his efforts.

Undoubtedly, the final video doesn’t unveil the exhaustive process behind its creation. It omits the failed attempts, logistical challenges, miscommunications, and physical risks endured. Sohan’s quest for authenticity once led him to undertake three arduous trips to capture a particular ethnic recipe in the hills. He found himself stranded in a remote village for seven days during Cyclone Remal, facing adversities like armed groups, bandits, and wildlife in the Sundarbans.

Nonetheless, he refrains from sensationalizing the struggles.

“I aim to inspire rather than dwell on negatives,” he asserts. “While negative content may attract more views, I strive to portray a positive image of Bangladesh.”

Navigating the thin line between positive storytelling and realism, Sohan asserts that he doesn’t shy away from highlighting genuine dangers.

“If a place poses legitimate risks, I include a warning in the video,” he emphasizes. His goal isn’t to paint a rose-tinted picture of Bangladesh but to spotlight its hidden gems before they fade into obscurity.

His approach to brand collaborations underscores his integrity.

“I have a strict policy for brand partnerships – I personally assess the service quality by staying at the hotel or resort for a day or two. Should the experience fall short, I decline the deal and cover my expenses,” he affirms. In an era inundated with paid promotions, such principles hold significance.

Looking ahead, Sohan envisions launching an academy to nurture a new wave of creators capable of producing impactful content on Bangladesh’s culture and heritage. A lofty aspiration, yet one grounded in his own journey, demonstrating that content creation need not commence with grandeur but rather with a simple road, a village, a conversation, and an attentive ear amidst a sea of indifference.
