Kim Jong Un Re-Elected General Secretary in Party Congress

-

North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party has re-elected Kim Jong Un as general secretary during a party congress meeting, as reported by state media. This move is perceived to reinforce his firm control over power and showcase increased confidence in domestic stability.

According to a report released by the KCNA state news agency, Kim was acknowledged for elevating the country’s status globally and positioning it securely to advance its revolutionary objectives. The military was praised for being transformed into a highly skilled and robust force under his guidance.

The enhancement of the country’s war deterrence, centered around its nuclear capabilities, was highlighted as a significant achievement during the congress proceedings, as stated by KCNA. Analyst Lim Eul-chul from Kyungnam University interpreted the reaffirmation of Kim’s leadership as a shift from crisis management to a phase of assured and enduring governance.

In addition to Kim’s re-election, the party congress also saw the election of members to the party Central Committee and the approval of amendments to party regulations. While specific modifications to the party charter were not disclosed, it was noted that certain senior officials were potentially excluded from the committee, including former Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong, Supreme People’s Assembly Standing Committee Chairman Choe Ryong Hae, and key military figure Ri Pyong Chol, indicating a possible change within the leadership.

Speculation arose as Kim’s teenage daughter, referred to as Ju Ae, did not make an appearance at the conference, leading to theories that she might be undergoing preparation to succeed her father. The ongoing party congress, the ninth of its kind held every five years, commenced with 5,000 delegates and is closely monitored by South Korea for insights into new domestic and foreign policy directions.

Thus far, no major policy initiatives have been unveiled, with the focus of the sessions centered on addressing economic challenges and advancements achieved under the Party’s governance.
