A legal case has been initiated against approximately 150 individuals regarding the incident where Brahmanbaria-2 MP Rumeen Farhana was prevented from honoring at the Shaheed Minar on February 21 in the district. The case was lodged by one of Rumeen’s supporters named Ahad at Sarail Police Station this afternoon, identifying former Sarail upazila BNP secretary Anwar Hossain as the primary accused.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sarail Police Station, Manzur Kader Bhuiyan, mentioned that the first information report named five individuals, with an additional 140 to 150 people listed as unidentified accused. The case has been officially registered with further legal actions pending after due investigation.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Friday as Rumeen visited the Sarail Central Shaheed Minar to pay respects on International Mother Language Day. Allegedly, BNP activists protested against her, leading to a confrontation escalating into a physical altercation. Reportedly, her wreath was damaged during the altercation.
Following the confrontation, Rumeen departed without paying respects, accompanied by her supporters who later staged a protest by blocking the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Shahbazpur for approximately an hour.
Rumeen, who secured the Brahmanbaria-2 seat as an independent candidate after being denied BNP nomination in the 13th parliamentary election and subsequently expelled from the party for contesting against its official candidate, has faced ongoing political challenges.
